Recipe for happy...

Give half the chance people would prefer to be alone, noone to answer to, noone reliant upon them and noone to tell them what to do. I used to be like that, that is until I found the love of my life a Shih Tzu X Lhasa Apso named Malakai. He is the most handsome boy in all of the city. He is so dedicated to me, loyal as and so full of unconditional love. Ok so i'm not a highly active person, love reading and would never be likened to an oil painting, but there he is when I get home ready to be cuddled and huggled with a smile on his face. I must admit it is my favourite part of the day to come home to such eagerness for affection, I feel the stress of work just drop away leaving me wonderfully relaxed for a great sleep, ready for another onslaught of the physical and emotional job of care work on the nursing home. Add that to joining a social group for Friday night drinks and yakking and you have recipe for a very nice week. Great friends, loads of unconditional love and enough money to pay for my book/reading habit and I am a happy man.

What does it mean to be a bear?

During last years picnic in the park a friend encouraged me to embrace my the bear within. I had grown a moustache for movember (p.s. I raised $145.00 for it - bonus) and found it suited me so I decided to keep it and was encouraged to grow a goatee, I don't blindly follow my friends advice usually but it seemed like a laugh so I went through with it. Three months down the track and here I am I have full on Ginger goatee, and strangely enough I don't mind it. So I read as much as I could on bears, bear culture and the community. The one thing that was always mentioned in the stuff about bears is the open and friendly atmosphere, so I decided to take the plunge and go to a bear club meeting. I haven't met a bigger bunch of benevolent boys for a very long time. The major conclusion I came to was that to be a bear in the gay community is to be friendly, open and have a love of life, friends and the community.

It's been a while

I know it's been a while since I blogged... Sorry :(

Since I last blogged my other half and I have finally got our bicycles off lay-by or as Americans call it lay away on Saturday and I have gone for a ride each day since, I forgot how much I enjoy riding. Over the years I've put on a bit of weight and riding around on this limited size seat has caused a slight aching around the buttocks area. I'm sure it will sort itself out soon enough. The next issue is to get a basket on the back so I can take the dog out and about with me, something I am really looking forward too, more puppy / daddy time. Something I definitely have to organize before the million paws walk in May. Next week hopefully we get our new futon.

Move over Harry Potter

Move over Harry Potter there is a new hero in town. Percy Jackson is America's attempt at gaining a literary/film hero genre back. How better to do this, than the man that brought Harry Potter into the cinema, Chris Columbus. For many years the American youth have been looking to a British boarding school wizard for inspiration, Percy still lives with his mother and alot more gritty and although being a demi-god is more down to earth. The books are self contained stories and by the looks of the film the 2 hour long story arcs will be too. Granted there is a mega arc of Percy becoming a man and finding himself but so much teenage fiction deals with that as well. Chris Columbus has done the incredible by bringing a second series to life, what next for this amazing producer/director?

This I promise you...

On Sunday free tickets to see Percy Jackson for Wednesday night 10/02. My other half said that he was going to have the evening off work, now I find out that I will be going alone as my other half will be going to work even though 4 days notice to change shifts... I did and an glad I did. It just seems to happen more and more often lately. I get the "yeah yeah yeah I will do it" and then one the day oh "sorry babe I can't do it because I forgot" or "sorry babe I didn't budget for it" I'm not angry just disappointed. I've now taken to giving 3 months notice in advance i.e. The RSPCA Million Paws Walk 16/05. We'll see what happens.

Trying to make friends (trial 1)

I was sitting on the bus one night on the way to work I believe it was Australia day (26 Jan). A night I hate anyway as there are so many drunken idiots around. Anyway I was sitting on the bus reading (as you do), and this young girl, couldn't have been more than 17 and drunk as. Her and her girlfriend wee siting in some seats diagnally across from me giggling and carrying on like drunken tools. She get up and heaves herself into the seat next to me I will lay out the dialogue as it needs repeating...
GIRL: What ya doin? (with alcohol breath and partial souring)
ME: Reading!
GIRL: What ya readin?
ME: A rare as is it for you generation to use them, a book!
GIRL: What is the book about?
ME: I'm sorry do I actually know you?
GIRL: No, I just thought you looked lonely.
ME: And if I was lonely what part of me looks like I would want to be speaking to you?
GIRL: Huh?
ME: (Getting pretty annoyed at this stage) I asked what part of me looks like I want to be talking to you?
GIRL: None
ME: Pardon?
GIRL: Nothing
ME: Well in that case go away.
GIRL: But...
ME: Go Away!
So she did she went and sat back with her friend Nd started giggling again. Really dislike teenagers, especially those ones that think they are just it. Add alcohol into the mix and I am extremely unable to warm to them. I try to be nice I really do just sometimes...

The art of communicating

Professionals talk about what percent is verbal and what percent is non-verbal when communicating. Working in aged care you need to up the non-verbal skills dramatically in order to communicate with the client/resident. The number of non-English speaking people in aged care facilities is raising dramatically year after year as they forget how to speak English and reverting back to their mother tongue, another side effect of the populate or perish policy, thank you oh so wise government. It's interesting to see just how much I have taken this non-verbal into the wider community, ordering a coffee today I realized I pointed to the menu board behind the serving girl, she took it in good humour, I realized I was turning into one of those people that live to work, not work to live. I NEED TO GET OUT MORE!!! All in good time dear reader, all in good time.

Can you see the future?

From the time I was a young child my parent where do I see myself in the future? My usual answer was I have no idea. As a teenager I dreamed of the future where I was no longer under the thumb of my parents and teachers and I could make my own decisions. Nowadays I dream of a future where my student loans will be paid and I will will be able to make future decisions. I can see the future now alot easier changing from PC to EN.
